Meet the Interns: Shaylee Arpin

Aug 02, 2016
Most kids growing up in a large town or city have little access to knowledge about agriculture, farming or even something as simple as where their food comes from.  My story would have been the same if my parents had not put my siblings and me into the Central Kansas District 4-H program. For twelve years, I dove head first into learning and soaking up as much information as I could. Because of my experiences with the 4-H program, I chose to major in agricultural communications and journalism with a minor in animal science and industry at Kansas State University.

As I emerge myself more into the agriculture industry, I find myself learning something new each day. Throughout school and now my internship with MKC as the communication intern, I know I have much more to learn. Different than many other majors, agriculture communications and journalism focuses on building necessary communication, writing and designing techniques. With little firsthand experience in the agricultural industry, I found myself focusing on an internship that would allow me to have face-to-face interaction with producers, opportunities to spend time in the field, and teach me more about how I can help grow agriculture with the skills I have and am learning in school.

Since January, I have been interning with MKC. Throughout the past six months, I have worked on a multitude of projects. Some of the projects have included updating the MKC history brochure, regularly updating Twitter and Facebook, developing Ag in the Classroom presentations, writing blogs, and helping create the monthly MKC employee newsletters.

As I look to the rest of my summer with MKC, I am excited to see what else I can participate in and how I can add value to the company while the experiences add value to me. With the guidance of my mentor, Nichole Gouldie, and intern coordinator, Hilary Worcester, I know that I will end this summer with more knowledge, experience, connections and feedback about my work.

It has been a great internship, and I am glad I get to share my passions of agriculture and journalism with others. I know my skills have developed already, and as I experience more, they will continue to grow. It has been exciting to meet the other 14 MKC and TMA interns and to have the opportunity to spend time outside of our internship together. MKC has taught me more than I imagined I would learn in a few short months. I am eager to see where the rest of my internship leads me and how else MKC can add value to me while I add value to the company.
